The BaxterCannon Gallery is the collaborative space of photographers Laurie Rae Baxter and Charles Cannon. Over the past decade their combined photographic storytelling has enhanced and critically extended the capacity of non-profits and NGO’s in a number of countries to expand their reach and increase the visibility of their efforts.

BaxterCannon Gallery is hosting a Halloween Pet Portrait Pop Up! This free, super fun, fundraiser for the RainCoast Dog Rescue Society and BFF- Balfour’s Friends Foundation. RainCoast Dog is a completely volunteer based organization who make a huge difference in the lives of dogs and cats. Their dedicated and compassionate support saves lives across Canada and abroad. BFF’s mission is to “provide financial aid for low-income pet owners in Greater Victoria, they help their sick and injured pets receive essential veterinary care and stay together with their families.” The free two day community event is planned to take place in our Gallery, located in Fernwood Square. All participants will be provided with an opportunity to receive a complimentary pet portrait against a festive, spooky backdrop. Your pet (s), and entire family, are encouraged to dress up in costume if they so desire! Those partaking are encouraged to donate to the RainCoast Dog Rescue Society and the Balfour Friends Foundation. Additionally, pet owners will be encouraged to enter a costume contest in which winners will receive prize baskets from Paws on Cook, Bosleys and the Healthy Spot (Victoria Branch). And, of course, pet treats will be on hand for all fur baby trick or treaters!
Past Project: Fernwood Then and Now

BaxterCannon’s undertaking, Fernwood Then and Now, is a project in which we are examined Fernwood through a historical, as well as a contemporary lens.
Our gallery was the fortunate recipient of a My Great Neighborhood Grant , courtesy of the City of Victoria, to aid in this endeavor. We were graciously sponsored by the Fernwood Community Association, and worked with our neighbors to create a show for Fall 2023. Images included Fernwood’s residents and merchants, as well as our ever changing places and spaces. We believe it is important to capture the spirit of our neighborhood and celebrate it with our fellow Fernwoodians.
BaxterCannon Gallery was so grateful to have had the opportunity to co-create a special community event with our local sponsor, the Fernwood Community Association, as well as all of our neighbours. We received funding from the City of Victoria to produce a special evening event, and create a lasting legacy document of Fernwood . Fernwood is a one-of -a -kind community consisting of special spaces, unique residents, and lively businesses. Through a collaboration with businesses and the community members we assembled a collection of images of Fernwood’s past and present . The exhibit captured the spirit of Fernwood and we celebrated our neighbourhood with an Opening event at our gallery. Images are currently posted online for the entire public to enjoy. Complimentary portrait sessions were offered by photographers CharlesCannon and Laurie Baxter in our studio throughout the month of September. All participants received a complimentary 8x10 photo from their sessions .

The Fernwood Small
As galleries have shuttered during social distancing and stay-at-home orders, the spirit of creativity has informed new relationships between art and viewers – Fernwood Small is one of these undertakings. The window exhibition at the BaxterCannon Gallery (dubbed The Fernwood Small) is a 24/7 outdoor gallery that creates a socially distant art experience for those who are reluctant to set foot in a gallery and affords the opportunity to view contemporary photography safely and with a coffee in hand.

What Does Fernwood Mean to You?
Congratulations to all of our winners: Don Craig, Austin Dennys, Thomas Guerrero, Shawnie Kelly, Shelby La Rose, Cheryl Mullen, Ryan Pederson, Annie Roslee, Rachel Seeley, Kate Shelton, Alex Skorochid, Derek Swallow & Reteka Yuvaraj.
We asked our creative community for photographic representations of our neighbourhood and Fernwoodians rose to the challenge. Our winners all captured distinctive images of Fernwood’s character using a variety of capture methods- even a pinhole camera! We feel these images speak to Fernwood’s longevity, resilience and vibrant spirit. BaxterCannon wishes to extend a heartfelt thank-you to the FCA and the City of Victoria for all of their support.

2022 Fernwood Art Stroll
June 11th & 12th of 2022 was a bustling, fun-filled weekend for BaxterCannon Gallery. Both photographers were honored to be part of Fernwood’s 14th annual Art Stroll https://www.fernwoodartstroll.ca/ Over 400 visitors (including some four legged furry ones), passed through our door. Many copies of our latest book, Cuba is it’s People, were sold and all proceeds were donated to the Friends of Cuba. The organization works tirelessly to end the blockades and inequality against Cuba.

SPCA Fundraiser Dog Costume Competition
On Halloween of 2020, BaxterCannon Gallery hosted a fundraiser for the SPCA’s Pet Food Bank in Fernwood Square. Faced with the challenge of hosting a safe event that still helped build community during the COVID-19 pandemic, we offered pet portraits in an open-air photo booth and raised money for pets and their guardians in need.
